On 3rd April 2017, the police used a water cannons and batons to disperse students demonstrating against the government's failure to pay their examination fees. The students from the Gwamile Vocational and Commercial Training Institute mobilised on the campus property to express their frustration over the government's response, as many of the students would be unable to afford the fees themselves. The Times of Swaziland reported that students were assaulted during the protests, although there was no definitive number given of how many were injured.
