On 30th July 2018, the Ligue Togolaise des Droits de l’Homme (LTDH; Togolese League of Human Rights) presented their report "La répression et la torture contre le changement démocratique" (The Repression and Torture against Democratic Change), outlining human rights abuses related to the anti-government protests between 19th August 2017 and 20th July 2018, in Lomé. New opposition protests and HRD arrested as political dialogue comes to a halt
On 11th April 2018, security forces dispersed opposition protests in Lomé and other towns in the country, reportedly using tear gas and causing several injuries. According to the opposition coalition, at least 25 people were injured and two opposition leaders were targeted by security forces. Read more

Anti-Gnassingbe protests continue: several deaths, arrests and harassement
As reported previously on the Monitor, authorities disrupted the access to social media and internet on 5th September hours before fresh planned opposition protests. The access was restored five days later, on 10th September. Nonetheless the internet disruption, protests took place on 6 and 7 September to call for constitutional reforms, including a return to the 1992 Constitution which limits the presidential mandate to two terms. The opposition protests follow the protests a couple of weeks earlier, on 19th August, which cost the lives of several protesters. Read more

Social media and internet disruption in an attempt to prevent opposition protest
Reports indicate that access to social media has been disrupted since 5th September in Togo. At the time of writing, access to social media platforms such as Whatsapp and Facebook are limited, while internet speed has been considerably reduced. The disruption to communication channels has come as opposition planned to protest on 6th September over the police brutality and use of excessive force at an opposition protest calling for presidential term limits held on 19th August that led to several deaths, injuries and arrests of protesters, as previously reported on the Monitor. The anti-Gnassingbé protests on 6th September drew thousands in the capital Lomé and in centres close to the capital, such as Be’ and Agoe. Read more
