Peaceful Assembly
During August, the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) led a protest against the Ministry of Education. Having made several unsuccessful attempts to secure payment for a number of teachers, the Union led a peaceful protest outside the Ministry of Education, which had refused to ‘reinstate the pay docked from the salaries of about 700 teachers after they attended two union meetings.’ The President of the BUT highlighted Ministry officials' negative attitude towards trade unions, and said the labour movement needed a new approach. The union argued that the labour movement was no longer being taken seriously and dialogue or negotiations were not being prioritised by the government.
