Student protesters clash with police

Peaceful Assembly

In early February, students at the University of Botswana and other tertiary institutions in the country protested over the late payment of their allowances, which they use to buy books and other educational materials. The protests turned violent as frustrated students began to destroy university property. The University of Botswana was promptly shut down and students were left on the streets following clashes with police deployed to disperse the protesters. A transgender student reported that she was stripped and harassed by the police, though that incident has not been confirmed. The University is scheduled to reopen on 6th March.
