Peaceful protests continue in Suriname

Peaceful Assembly

As previously reported on the Monitor, people held regular peaceful demonstrations calling on the government to address Suriname's economic problems. As the country continues to face a worsening economic outlook, demonstrations have continued into the second half of 2016. At the start of the new academic year, students at Anton de Kom University of Suriname (ADEK) protested against the increase in fees, but there were no reported cases of interference with students protesting against government policies. Indigenous land rights protests also continued, and again, there were no indicators of an obstruction of citizens’ rights to assemble.
