Mark King, a former Cabinet Minister from the ruling United Democratic Party, sued local activist Moses Sulph for a Facebook post Sulph published which reported irregularities with the payment of social security benefits from a company owned by King. King’s lawyer tried to persuade Sulph to make a public apology, but when Sulph refused to, a lawsuit was filed against him.

Peaceful Assembly

A few protests have taken place in Belize over the last several months. For example, in March 2018 the Belize National Teachers Union held a protest to condemn the high levels of crime. In a separate incident, the community of Barranco protested after not receiving an authorisation to log when non-Belize nationals had. In both incidents, no reports of repression were recorded.
