Peaceful Assembly
The police killing of 19-year-old Tevin Gordon at his home in Tivoli Gardens on 15th July sparked angry protests by residents of the area. Protestors rejected police claims that Gordon was armed, instead alleging that police had shot him while he was asleep in his bed. Community members blocked sections of a highway close to the area, demanding that his killers be brought to justice.
Localised protest of this kind occur frequently in Jamaica. Protests typically concern social issues such as a lack of resources, water, electricity and bad roads. Most of the protests occur without major incident or the excessive use of force by police. However, groups who advocate for the rights of LGBTI people fear reprisals by individuals and the police.
