Hungary-Overview

Throughout 2015-16, Hungary has been at the centre of the recent refugee flows into Europe, from Syria and the north and horn of Africa. The government has responded, controversially, by installing a fence along its southern border, and introducing a raft of restrictive immigration and border control policies targeting asylum seekers. In parallel, civic freedoms have declined. NGOs critical of government policies have been threatened with deregistration, and subject to baseless legal and administrative investigations into their activities.
