Three journalists arbitrarily arrested in Somaliland and Puntland

In the span of five weeks, three journalists were arrested in Puntland and in Somaliland. Journalist and founder of Puntlandone.com Ahmed Ali Kilwe was arrested by security forces in Garowe, the administrative capital of the semi-autonomous Puntland, on 2nd July 2017. His arrest is related to a Facebook he wrote on 23rd June, criticizing the president of Puntland, Abdiweli Ali, and his use of public funds. According to the Media Association of Puntland, who spoke with officials, Ali Kilwe was arrested by counter terrorism police on a directive of the President for "posting articles impertinent to the Puntland President". Journalist detained for questioning the Minister of Health

Editor of the online news portal Horseed Media, Mohamed Adan Dirir, was arrested without charges on 24th May 2017 in Hargeisa for asking a critical question to the Minister of Health Saleban Isse Ahmed at a press conference. He is currently still in detention, although the Constitution of Somaliland mandates authorities to charge or release suspects within 24 hours of their detention. Read more

On 6th June, Sagal Salad Osman, a producer and presenter for state-owned Radio Mogadishu, was shot by unknown gunmen in Hodan district, Mogadishu. She later died of her injuries. Read more
