On 24th September 2021, police in Neuquén evicted a Mapuche Lof Quemquemtreu community from territory they had occupied near El Bolsón, Río Negro province. About 30 Indigenous people, who are in the process of reclaiming ancestral territory, were violently evicted by police using disproportionate force – including rubber bullets and firearms. Spyware found on devices of 35 journalists and civil society activists in El Salvador

On 12th January 2022, a joint investigation by civil society groups Access Now, Front Line Defenders, The Citizen Lab, Amnesty International, Fundación Acceso, and SocialTIC showed that NSO Group’s Pegasus technology was used in El Salvador for the surveillance of journalists and civil society. Pegasus spyware was discovered on mobile phones belonging to at least 30 journalists in the country, 23 of whom worked with news outlet El Faro. Read more  |  Read in Spanish

On 20th December 2021, three people - including a six month old baby - were killed when police opened fire during a protest in Goma, North Kivu. A coalition of citizen movements had called for a ville morte protest action to denounce the increasing insecurity in eastern DRC and, what protesters believe but is denied by authorities, plans to deploy Rwandan police in the fight against terrorism. Five activists charged with "illegal assembly" for event on the occasion of Human Rights Day

On 10th December 2021, police arrested four activists of the pro-democracy movement Tournons la Page Niger - Armadan Moussa, Biliyaminou Idi, Moubarak Habou and Hima Hamani - while participating in the "citizen caravan of democracy", an event organised annually in Niamey on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, to raise awareness about the respect of fundamental freedoms and the benefits of democracy. Journalists Ferdinand Ayité and Joël Egah, editors of the newspapers L'Alternative and La Fraternité respectively, were placed into custody on 10th December 2021 on accusations of insulting authorities, defamation and dissemination of falsehoods in relation to comments both journalists made during a discussion on L'Autre Journal, a current affairs programme run on L'Alternative's You Tube channel.
