Access to information limited during former president's trial

On 13th August 2018, the Asociacion de Periodistas de El Salvador (Journalists Association of El Salvador) reported that a court in El Salvador banned all recording devices during the hearing of former President Elias Antonio Saca. The ex-leader is currently facing corruption charges. Fears are growing that this is an attempt to limit information about the trial. On 29th August 2019, Edison Lanza the Special Rapporteur for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights stressed that access to information should not suppressed under the guises of confidentiality or national security.

On 16th August 2018, the regional platform of women human rights defenders (WHRDs), IM-Defensoras, alerted to an attempted break-in at the premises of Radio GüijaThe organisation said that the attack could related to the radio station's work in defence of the environment and women's rights.

On 14th August 2018, the organisation Mujeres Transformando (Women Transforming), an organisation working for women’s labour rights reported an attempted break-in at their offices. Security camera  footage captures an unknown armed person repeatedly trying to enter the organisation's office. After realising he was being recorded, the unknown assailant tried to move the camera before fleeing the scene. Mujeres Transformando called on authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the incident.
