EU signs trade deal with Vietnam despite ongoing suppression of civic freedoms

Despite criticism from civil society, on 30th June 2019, the European Union and Vietnam on signed a free trade deal . In the last few months, civil society has documented arrests and prosecution of individuals for their peaceful expression in Vietnam, the disappearance of activists and long sentences handed down to protesters. Intimidation of activists and journalists in El Salvador

On 27th May 2019, activists from Colectiva Amorales received subpoenas from a Salvadorian court; they are accused of slander by Professor Ricardo Mendoza of the University of San Salvador. Colectiva Amorales is an organisation that uses art to publicly denounce cases of violence against women. In 2016 the movement denounced Mendoza for taking advantage of his role and status as a theatre professor to sexually assault his students. Colectivo Amorales issued a statement asserting that this recent court case is an attempt to censor and silence human rights defenders. Read more

Civic freedoms in Cuba becoming increasingly restrained

Cuba continues to use arbitrary detention and harassment as strategies to restrict civic space. A frequent target of such tactics, organization Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White) reported that 26 of their members were arrested on 23rd of June on their way to Sunday Masses, which were organised as rites of prayer for the freedom of political prisoners. Belizean referendum on territorial dispute with Guatemala generates protests

A referendum on whether Belize's long-standing territorial dispute with Guatemala should be taken to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) became a divisive issue in the country. Generating both support and opposition demonstrations, the referendum initially scheduled to take place on April 10th 2019 was postponed after opposition People's United Party (PUP) filed an injunction questioning its constitutionality.
