The freedoms of expression, assembly and association continue to be violated in Uganda. Authorities use legislation on organisation of assemblies to undermine the right to protest, especially when those protests aim at opposing the government. State and non-state actors frequently target, threaten and intimidate human rights defenders, journalists, independent media and political activists. During the 2016 election cycle, restrictions on civic space increased, police violently dispersed protestors, and attacks on local and international media persisted, including the blockage of social media platforms on election day.
