A high-income economy according to World Bank criteria, Trinidad and Tobago exhibits significant inequality. The country boasts a pluralistic civil society comprising workers’ organisations, advocacy CSOs and organisations providing various social services. Although the basic freedoms that make up civic space are constitutionally recognised and mostly enforced, some legal as well as de facto limitations remain, including defamation statutes, police abuses, a backlogged judiciary, and blatant discrimination and frequent crimes against the LGBTI population.
