On two separate occasions in August, police disrupted demonstrations organised in Dakar by students of Cheikh-Anta-Diop University, the biggest in the country. On 1st August, demonstrators were dispersed with tear gas as they took to the streets demanding the release of a student who had been arrested during a strike a few days earlier. On 16th August, students blocked the main avenue leading to the university, in protest at the non-payment of their allowances. Although it remained largely peaceful, police violently disrupted the demonstration again using tear gas.
