Press freedom continues to be under extreme pressure in South Sudan. Journalists have been killed while reporting and threats against media professionals have led to an increase in self-censorship. In addition, the government has threatened independent media outlets.
On 3rd April 2017, the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS), requested that President Salva Kiir take action to protect media professionals and release all journalists who are currently in detention. In the petition to the president, AMDISS Secretary General Koang Pal urged the government to allow media outlets to reopen.
