On 2nd September 2024, journalist Rodrigue Ahégo, activist Hito Akpotsui of Universités Sociales du Togo (UST) and Beninese activists Rock Ahoton and Sévérin Avoce were handcuffed and detained in Lomé by individuals claiming to be officers of the Togolese gendarmerie. They were reportedly taken to Djidjolé in a car with a Nigerian number plate, where they were questioned about their activities, and reportedly told their arrest was in the context of administrative control. They were released later that day.
