Peaceful Assembly
Protests in Belize erupted over the murder of 13-year old Faye Lin Cannon, who was allegedly killed by her adopted parents. On 7th July 2017, residents of San Pedro organised a protest demanding justice for Cannon. According to reports, permission to hold the protest was initially denied, but after an hour of protesting, police approved the demonstration for the next day. On 21st July 2017, another protest was organised in front of the courthouse where the judge would decide on detaining the suspects or allowing possible release on bail. Permission to hold the protest was again denied and therefore, the demonstrators decided to picket in front of the courthouse.
