Expression
During the 164th Extraordinary Period of Sessions of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights held in Mexico City from 4th to 8th September 2017, Red de Medios e Iniciativas de Comunicacion Alternativa reported its concerns over the current state of freedom of expression in Costa Rica. The concerns included a legal framework "under which broadcasting in the country currently operates is obsolete and does not recognize inter-American standards on freedom of expression", as well as a worrying concentration of media ownership and specific cases involving collective layoffs of journalists.
