Peaceful Assembly
On 1st August 2017, Vladimir Lantigua Baldera, a 29-year-old leader of the political movement Frente Amplio de Lucha Popular (Falpo) in San Francisco de Macorís and an activist with the Movimiento Popular Dominicano was shot dead while participating in a 48-hour strike against corruption. Falpo members claim that police killed Latinga and they presented evidence to that effect during a press conference; however, the police have rejected the accusation.

As reported on the Monitor, Movimiento Marcha Verde (Green March Movement) - a social movement organising peaceful protests over the Odebrecht corruption scandal - has continued to hold demonstrations since January 2017. On 6th August 2017, a Marcha Verde took place in the province of María Trinidad Sánchez. Later that month, on 13th August the movement organised another demonstration in Bonao to demand an investigation of the Punta Catalina project before the authorities signed the Pacto Eléctrico (Electricity Pact), which Marcha Verde asserts would be a "criminal act" if signed without a proper criminal investigation. The Punta Catalina project was developed by Odebrecht before the company was hit with allegations of corruption. Both marches in August took place peacefully and without disruption.
